From 1994 until 2010 John served as the Director of Community Relations and Community Education for the Tuscaloosa County Board of Education. In this capacity, he served as the spokesperson for the Tuscaloosa County School System and coordinated twenty after school programs. On November 2, 2010, John was elected to the Alabama State House representing District 62. Subsequently, he resigned his position with the Tuscaloosa Co. School System because he is not a double dipper. Double dipping means an individual is receiving two or more state salaries simultaneously. 

John serves as the Secretary/Treasurer of the House Republican Caucus and is a member of the Rules Committee, Economic Development and Tourism Committee, and the Constitution, Campaigns, and Elections Committee. In addition to serving his constituents in the legislature, John currently serves as a Business Development Officer at First Federal Bank in Tuscaloosa.

John has been married to Cindy Benford Merrill for 29 years. They have two children, Brooks, 24, and Allie Grace, 21. A native of Heflin, AL, Merrill is a deacon at Calvary Baptist Church and has also served as Sunday School teacher and member of the Sanctuary Choir. He graduated from the University of Alabama where he was also elected President of the Student Government Association.

John has been criss-crossing Alabama for the last year and a half talking to voters like you. He has driven more than 100,000 miles going to community meetings, parades, and festivals.
